I always thought I could trust the supermarkets. You probably do too.

When I was a lad, I'd get out of puff running to the local corner store to buy a bottle of fizzy pop, blissfully unaware of just how many chemicals were needed to turn the liquid that wicked purple.

Then, when I grew up and had children, I'd push them up and down the aisles in the trolley letting them eat the fresh baguette from the bakery on the way round. Little did I know, that ‘fresh' baguette had probably sat going stale for 10 days before I got sucked into the ‘artisan' label and bought it.

What can I say; I had faith in the big chains. I know they're businesses out to make profits but I never thought of them as money-grabbing scammers out to strip the nutrients from my food and put me and my family at risk of life-threatening illnesses just so their food could stay on the shelf a little longer.

All that changed when I was sitting down to watch Countryfile one evening. I can't get on with these new mod-cons and somehow punched the wrong number into the remote flicking my set onto a documentary on the freshness of food. Well, I was flabbergasted. In fact, I had to watch some of the gruesome shots from behind a cushion!

You won't believe the disgusting things I discovered. Just take a look!

I was so consumed and disgruntled by the programme that I even forbade my wife from watching her favourite soap since I simply could not turn away from these horrifying facts that were laid before me!

When the show had finished, I decided to take control of the situation and prevent these supermarket scammers from dictating the amount of deadly chemicals in my dinner.

I was also sick of paying an arm and a leg for foods that I knew were dirt cheap to source. And I'm not alone. Back in April, Age Concern reported that a fifth of pensioners are cutting back on essentials due to everything being so bloody expensive.

The next morning, I did some ringing around and managed to secure myself a little allotment. There, I'd grow my own fresh fruit and veg safe in the knowledge that every morsel that passed my lips would be 100% natural and good for my health.

I also decided to do a bit of research myself and being the grand old age that I am, was mortified to find strong links between debilitating and often fatal diseases and additives, pesticides and fertilizers.

Just look at these revolting facts:

I don't know about you but that's enough to put me off my breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm so paranoid about the food on offer nowadays; I wonder what on earth I can eat that's safe, nutritional and not bland old rabbit food.

Just one final thought before I reveal all though…

For a long time now, we've been ordered to stick rigidly to this 5-a-day plan. Now, I'm not one to follow regimes if they're not truly beneficial to my health, but I know I start feeling a bit ropey if I don't get my 5 servings of fruit and veg.

So it came as a surprise a few years back when I read an article published in the Daily Express claiming that actually, we should be nearing 20 portions of fruit and vegetables a day – 4 x what they initially advised!

According to Natural Health Expert, Dale Pinnock, we need to up our intake drastically. He said:

‘The current five-a-day recommendations are based on standard dietary guidelines written 40 years ago, when the soil was richer in vitamins and minerals. Now, because of intensive farming methods and increased pollution, fresh fruit and vegetables don't contain nearly enough nutrients.'

So what are we supposed to be eating?
Should we be supplementing with vitamins to fill in the nutritional gaps in our diet?

Well, not exactly. Our bodies need vitamins in order to function properly and maintain health, but only in small amounts. Overdo that and you're putting your health at risk.

It's hard, if not impossible for vitamins to duplicate the nutritional benefits that natural foods deliver. Plus, they're not as readily digestible meaning it takes longer for our body to feel the benefits.

Excessive consumption of vitamins can also have some nasty side effects. For example, if you take too much vitamin C, you could end up with agonising stomach cramps and diarrhea.

And you know what? The vitamin market is just like the old supermarkets… they're in it for the cash. In 2009, the UK's vitamin market was estimated at over £670 million – that's an eye-watering amount of money being spent when we could reap the same benefits naturally.

It's utter madness and a frustrating conundrum. We're left completely confused – we can't eat the supermarket food because it's full of additives, preservatives and pesticides. We can't rely on vitamins and supplements because there's a danger that they put our health at risk too. So what do we do?
